In recent centuries it has become common to see artistic portrayals of the Holy Family together, rather than only individual images of Mary and Joseph, often on opposite sides of the church. It is still rather rare to find images of Mary and Joseph alone as Husband and Wife, apart for traditional depictions of the Betrothal. On the occasion of the publication of Redemptoris Custos in 1989, Fr. Franco Verri, CSJ painted this image of the Holy Spouses.
